No area in the city does fun with flair than trendy King West in the heart of Downtown. There are an amazing assortment of bars and libations waiting to be tasted. Here are a few of my favourite places.
Portland Variety: Their Kentucky Mule was a revelation, and a cheeky spank to the ass in terms of playfulness and flavour. The wonderfully friendly bartender Christine cedar plank smoked my glass prior to building my Bulleit Bourbon based drink. Mixed with their house made brown sugar syrup this drink paired perfectly with the amazing Memphis barbecue I had next door at Home of the Brave. I can’t wait to come back here next time I’m back in Toronto.
Weslodge: One of my favourite places on King West to drink and eat, their cocktail menu and creative libations are as delicious as their savoury fare. Featured here is their Old Fashioned with a kick, in comparison to the cheeky Kentucky Mule at Portland Variety, Weslodge’s take on the Old Fashioned is a slap to the face full of smokey bourbon.
Home of the Brave: Join or die–Delectable drinks adventures await you at Home of the Brave, their house made jalepeño infused pineapple syrup made this tequila based drinks the perfect combination of spicy and sweet. I strongly recommend the San Diego Mindset for a treat.
Biermarket: this King West outpost is as raging as their Esplanade location on a Friday and Saturday night. Whether it’s for throwing back a beer in the heart of winter or people watching during patio season Biermarket is always a great choice when you’re paralyzed by options on King. When booking a special event their high top tables double up as a great VIP area for a bite to eat and rounds of drinks before heading out to the real party.
The Red Tomato: hands down the best kept happy hour secret in the city with insanely cheap drinks and an extensive array of tantalizing dishes. The perfect spot away from crowds for an intimate get together at the bar or for rounding up the gang.
Hey Lucy’s: $4 Martinis and gummies at the bottom of my glass. For alcoholic diabetes in a pony glass Hey Lucy’s on King is the best place to go on a Wednesday night as this deal goes all night long until close.
District Eatery: Adjacent to restaurant row and steps away from Tiff Bell Lightbox has an intimate rooftop patio that is wonderfully live during the summer. Although light on the drinks specials their cocktails are sure to please.
GUSTO101: Hands down one of my favourite places of all time on King West. This staple offers a year round rooftop patio which is perfect rain or shine for brunch, catching up with friends and soaking in some sunlight. Come back here and sit by the bar or in the main dining room for a lively vibe, great drinks and an amazing atmosphere to meet people.
Baro: Pitchers of margaritas and Fusion Latino Street Food. Need I say more? Their Hibiscus Margarita packs a delightful punch and is perfect in the pitcher variety while catching up with girlfriends. Great scenery in terms of restaurant decor down to the servers and dining clientele Baro is sure to please from Pisco to Tequila indulge to your heart’s content at this gem.
La Carnita: This intimate space is the perfect place to catch up over drinks with friends especially when you’re in the mood for a taco or two. The cocktails are to die for. This Billionaire’s Cup was a delicious strong twist on a cocktail classic.
El Caballito: Imbibing in a big group or celebrating for a special occasion. El Caballito will take care of all your beverage needs and provide some delicious nibbles al fresco or in the dining room.
With Toronto finally expanding the number of rooftop lounges and spaces there’s an exciting array of rooftop lounges with some serious cocktails and views.
Whether you’re day drinking in the sun and dreaming about different patio spaces at Brassaii, or wandering the streets of King West at night there’s a whole host of drinks and delightful bar places. Cheers to sipping around town and discovering some great libations.
